What is Solar Energy

Solar energy, the most abundant and renewable resource on the planet, is produced when the photons in photovoltaics or PV are converted into electricity. The sun’s heat or light is converted into either energy using semiconductors or thermal heat energy. Although it does not produce pollution, solar energy can be expensive and its efficiency is significantly dependent upon geographical location and season.


Solar systems have several components. Solar panels are made up of solar modules, which are made up of solar cells. The silicon wafers in solar cells are similar to the wafers used in computer chips.

Inverters convert the sun’s direct current electricity into alternating current so it can be used in our homes. This current is then fed into our electrical panels, which pushes the energy toward the appliances and lighting in our homes.

If your system is connected to the electrical grid, your electricity meter will measure the amount of electricity you produce and compare it to your usage. You may or may not be offered compensation from the power company if you produce more electricity than you use. However, connection to the grid ensures that you have power even when your solar system doesn’t produce enough for your needs.

Power Generation

Solar panels rely on solar energy, so they cannot produce at night. In addition, they produce significantly less power during the winter months and in more northern geographical locations. Your panel’s tilt, shade and exposure direction will all affect its efficiency.

Typical solar panels produce 180-360W of power per two hours when they are hit by the sun directly. Keep in mind that one 10W light bulb may use 10W of power per hour.
